Also referred to as the  Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) the grand white marble monument was built to honor Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a new unified Italy.

The monument, the largest in Rome, was controversial since its construction destroyed a large area of the Capitolinie Hill.
